So today we were up for sunrise and sunset and saw them from two different but equally beautiful places.
So sunrise picture was taken over some fields as we waited to see meerkats! We sat in little chairs about a metre away from the burrow they slept in and when they got up they stood sunning themselves for 20 mins within spitting distance of us.
There were 10 in total in this family and they were all adorable (and scared of everything from planes to mice - everything except for us that it). Our guide spent 6 months "habituating" the family by moving closer every day so they got used to him being around and it worked - we sat so close and they didn't pay us any attention.
Then we went for a scenic drive - Clare even got behind the wheel but gave up as soon as it got to dirt trackish, which is a loop up a mountain called Swartburg Pass, over 1500m high.
Clare is really good driver (once you get past the questions like "which gear am I in" and "am I on the right side of the road"...).
There were no walls and one side of the road was a sheer drop as we went up the pass - felt pretty adventurous driving our little hire car up to the top - until too very old ladies pulled up behind us having just done the same thing. We had to leave quickly as Rich was worried they might overtake us on the way down using their super ninja granny skills.
In the afternoon we drove back via a waterfall, which had some naked German in it ruining the view, and De Rust, a town which felt like an old American frontier town and was absolutely beautiful. The people are all incredibly friendly and the food is excellent.
For dinner (sunset picture above) we headed to Buffelsdrift Lodge, an amazing restaurant set on a huge lake on a game reserve...we couldn't afford to stay here this time but the food was amazing - especially the babootie: venison mince with raisins and curry powder with scrambled egg on top. I guess maybe it just the local shepherds pie but if that is the case then African shepherds eat well!
